Is Baizhu destined to die? …

This question has been tormenting me since I played his Story Quest. The world of Teyvat is becoming more and more complex and full of dangers and I wonder if the time will come when some companions we met on our journey will no longer be at our side.

I must say that this thought already breaks my heart and I wonder who of them is the most quoted for such an end…

Baizhu's story is very sad and makes me fear that he could be one of the candidates to abandon us.

Let's get to know Baizhu better

Baizhu is the owner of the Bubu pharmacy in Liyue, a man with great medical knowledge, with a sickly appearance, who often takes care of his patients without asking for anything in return but who also carries with him a mysterious aura, which often leads you to wonder if he hides something more behind his kind smile. Baizhu, known by the nickname of Mr. Bai, is always in the company of his white snake named Changsheng.

Baizhu - "The Heart of Healing"

In his Story Quest we can delve deeper into Baizhu's character, learning about his dedication to medicine and his commitment to saving human lives even at the cost of his own life, which he will demonstrate by bringing Zhang Lee back to life just like he did with Qiqi. In this Quest we will also learn more about the true bond between him and his white snake, Changsheng.

The indissoluble bond with Changsheng

To better understand how important and deep their bond is, we need to go back in time, when a doctor, tired of seeing people die from diseases, decided to look for the "Lord of Herbs" in the Chenyu Valley, and it was there that the doctor found an albino snake.

The white snake offered to sign a contract with him, in exchange for knowledge of the secrets of healing, informing him that this would compromise his health.

The doctor accepted the pact with the snake, thus acquiring powers that went beyond human capabilities.

Unfortunately, just as the snake had told him, this great power consumes their body and soul, inevitably leading to death.

When the doctor died, he passed on the contract to his favorite disciple and so, Changsheng, the white snake spent his life assisting several doctors until the end of their days.

Baizhu met Changsheng when he was still very young, he grew up without parents and followed in the footsteps of the master who had taken care of him, a medical expert, when he died like all the other doctors before him he entrusted the white snake into Baizhu's hands along with an important question, "This contract, was it a medicine or a poison?"

and so Baizhu, facing his master's destroyed tombstone along with Changsheng from mourning, signed the contract with him along with the promise "No one would die anymore, no one would suffer anymore, including Changsheng, this contract would be the last".

Baizhu's eyes took on a vertical shape like that of a serpent that shone, fueled by the promise he had sealed with Changsheng.

“The Legend of the White Snake” (白蛇伝, Hakujaden)

The story between Baizhu and Changsheng reminds me of a Chinese Legend “The Legend of the White Snake”

This Legend tells the story of the difficult and troubled love of Bai Suzhen and Xu Xian, a man and a yokai with the true appearance of a white snake, who will fall in love and open a pharmacy together living happily, until their love and their life will not be put to the test by the monk Fa Ha convinced that Bai uzhen is an evil spirit.

In this legend Bai Suzhen will bring her beloved Xu Xian back to life using special medicinal herbs just like Baizhu does with Qiqi and Zhang Lee.

This very well-known legend in China speaks of love, gratitude and perseverance and has been declared a cultural heritage so I would not be surprised if the story of Baizhu is a little inspired by this legend.

Playing the characters' story quests allows you to get to know them more deeply, often moving you to learn about sides you would never have imagined.

Did you know Baizhu's story?

I would like to know your opinion and what you would have done in his place. Would you have made the same choice?
