Pros: -Great teamfights -Strong 1v1s later in game -Pretty good behind because of his utility -Can play around himself and around the team

Cons: -no build variety pretty much, no full dmg build on top -Tough early game -can't solo carry the game -if he gets behind then ok he is great in teamfights but in 1v1s u pretty much lose always
Maokai is a tank who excells at teamfights, kind of splitpushing and CC is his main thing. Should you play him? Probably yes, but not solo, he is much better with a high dps duo such as Vayne, Samira, Viego, Viktor, Vladimir or smth else.

Overall
He's a good teamfighter, a pretty good blindpick, a champion that excells with items mostly and is designed to play defensively on lane, but you can try and make a good agressive play if you want to. Overall I would definitely recommend picking up maokai and trying him as he is getting stronger with the current meta :D.
